Processing
The 'Alcan' gas injection process involves the injection of a gas into a melt via a rotating impeller or vibrating nozzle
Applications
Closed cell aluminium foams are an ultra-light material, with potential structural applications in transport and construction. They may also be used in energy absorbing structures and heat exchangers

Technique
Photography (no microscope)
Length bar
10 mm
Further information
This is a continuous casting process which obviates foaming agents and the restrictions that they impose on temperature and processing time. However, molten metal drains through the structure due to gravitational forces and the resulting foam has a pronounced density gradient.
