- Further information
- A high carbon steel that has been quenched producing martensite laths in the microstructure. High carbon steels are more prone to the formation of martensite since more excess carbon is available to be trapped interstitially. Subsequently tempered to diffuse some of the carbon out, resulting in a reduced hardness.
